Last Tuesday Fergus had his op to remove his right hind leg. After months of struggling and constant bandage changes and physio he still had no feeling in his foot. Mum made the decision to amputate.

Mum was allowed to collect him on the Wednesday the day after the op and was seriously nervous about seeing him for the first time and how she would react – didn’t want any waterworks flooding the vets office.

On collection mum was called in to go over the after care and pills Fergus had to take. After that Fergus was brought in – he walked into the vet office on the lead less than 24 hours after his op. Mum managed to hold it together and was over the moon with how well he was doing!

On getting home mum took Fergus out in to the garden to explore to find him keen to get going and have a good sniff. She could hardly believe it.

The few days following the op Fergus slept a lot more than normal but still ate as normal and walked himself everywhere – even ran up the stairs when mum wasn’t watching!

After about 5 days’ mum started to get a bit worried as Fergus was being quite dazed and not wanting to move an awful lot. She took him to the vet where he was examined and it was concluded there was nothing physically wrong with him. The vet suggested cutting down on some of the tablets to see if it helped.

We are now a 4 days on from the vet visit and Fergus is back to normal, he wants to play and run around. He’s back chasing everything that moves in the garden. He’s now off all tablets and is getting his stitches out on Monday.

Less than 2 weeks from the op Fergus is just as fast, playful and cheeky as he was on 4 legs, if anything more so as he’s not being hindered by his bad leg.

I would fully recommend considering amputation to anyone worrying or trying to make the tough decision – I was hesitant at first as it seemed so final but seeing Fergus now I wish I had done it sooner. He is now fully back to being what he is best – a dog. No prodding or poking from mum or the vets – no bandages changes or boots on and off for going outside. And if anything the entire process has strengthen our bond.

Thank you

Hi Everyone,

I just wanted to say thank you for all the responses to my first post and all the advice and positive feedback we have received, its helped me and my mum to look on the brighter side of things are shown us 3 legs are just as good as 4 if it comes to amputation.

My infection on my foot has healed a bit and is starting to scab over, hopefully in a few days I will be able to get my bandage off and let it heal in the fresh air. Then I can get back to physio!

Just wanna [play
Just wanna play

Thanks again!

From the beginning

Hi everyone, my name’s Fergus and I am a 1 and a half year old Parson Russell Terrier. I live with my Dog mum Stef in Aberdeenshire, Scotland.

About 2 and a half months ago I was hit by a car when I escaped out the front door and chased a cat across the road, I was taken to the vet and had to get a big operation to fix my broken pelvis. Luckily nothing else was damaged.

After my op mum took time off work and helped me get back to normal, we went back to the vet for my post op check and to find my pelvis had healed nicely, and the vet was pleased with my progress. After that I was aloud to start physiotherapy as the nerves in my foot were still a bit damaged and I was struggling to put my pads on the floor and walking on my toes instead.

We were given exercises to do by the physio which we did religiously everyday but the scraping on my paw was getting worse and worse with not standing properly until I got an infection.  I had to get my foot bandaged and go back to taking yucky tablets. I decided I didn’t need the bandage and have caused my mum a lot of trouble trying to get my foot better and haven’t been able to go to my physio sessions. The last time I bit my bandage off I bit some of my toe off too because I cant feel what I am doing. Mum had to take me back to the vet again who wasn’t pleased with the progress of my nerves and doesn’t think I will ever get them back.

The vet suggested amputating my whole leg, mum cried a lot and doesn’t seem to know what to do, she’s told me she is determined to get my foot better so we can try some more physio before we have to go down the amputation route and we have to go back to the vet in 4 weeks time to discuss it further.

If anyone has any advice or stories that could help it would be much appreciated.

Love

Fergus
